Funding for Emerald Oval

Emerald Oval users will finally get the female-friendly sports facilities they deserve in a new sporting pavilion thanks to a funding boost from the Andrews Labor Government.

Labor Upper House Member for Northern Victoria, Jaclyn Symes joined Wodonga Mayor Cr Anna Speedie and representatives from Wodonga Raiders Female and Junior Football Club, Belvoir Cricket Club and Wodonga Raiders Cricket Club, to announce $160,000 from the Victorian Government’s Female Friendly Facilities Fund.

"Women and girls are signing up to play local sport in record numbers, but many facilities were built in a bygone era where change rooms for females were poor or didn’t exist. We’re changing that," Ms Symes said.

"Today’s grant announcement will enable Wodonga Council to construct a new sporting pavilion at Emerald Oval and two new change rooms.

"Every player deserves equal access to high quality facilities and these grants will benefit every woman and girl who participates in sport and active recreation in the area."

Cr Speedie said Emerald Oval would provide a base for female cricket in Wodonga.

"This facility will provide a greater level of service to all female participants, spectators and community members that are involved with activities at Emerald Oval by providing amenities that presently do not exist," Cr Speedie said.

"This oval is predominantly used for training but this project will allow for Emerald Oval to be used as a stand-alone match venue and accommodate the expansion of football and cricket as well offer new opportunties."

The council will provide an $80,000 contribution to the $240,000 project.

The Female Friendly Facilities Fund is part of the Victorian Government’s strong commitment to sports and active recreation, gender equality and to encourage all Victorians to get out there and get active.
