The Place Names Advisory Committee assists Wodonga Council with its responsibilities under the Geographical Place Names Act, 1988.
The committee assists the council in the effective conduct of its responsibilities for:
- The investigation and determination of geographic place names to recommend to the council; and,
- The notification of new or altered names to the Registrar for inclusion in the Register for official mapping data and other purposes.
The committee brings together community members who have an interest in local history, heritage, culture, place naming, community identity and civic participation, to provide quality and timely advice, make recommendations or provide comment to the council.
In doing so, it helps to ensure that Wodonga Council’s place names are considered in the context of fostering respect and recognition for Wodonga’s heritage, history and uniqueness, its local traditional owners and reflecting a diverse representation of cultures and people, gender, community contribution and inclusiveness.
By joining the committee, community members can share their local / regional knowledge and experience and help shape place naming in the municipality.
Appointments will be for two or four years, with committee members meeting four to six times per year, although additional meetings may be convened at the discretion of the Chairperson.
