The council received National Stronger Regions Funding from the Federal Government to conduct works in the CBA, which will include the completion of works in High St including landscaping. This would be from Bond to South streets.

Works will begin in the northern end of High St and the intersection with South St in January 2018 .

The works will include the reconstruction of High St from Bond St to South St which will upgrade underground services in the area.

The works will also include landscaping, beautification and new street lighting, the undergrounding of overhead cables and reconstruction of Bond St.

Main features

  • Reconstruction of High St from Bond St to South St
  • Will remove dip in the road and improve drainage in the area
  • Angled parking to remain
  • Work will include landscaping, beautification, new street lighting
Timeline
  • Road is open!
    April 9, 2018

The newly reconstructed section of High St is now open to traffic. Thank you for your patience and co-operation during these works.

  • Pedestrian crossing
    March 29, 2018
The pedestrian crossing in the northern end of High St is now open for people - and the Easter bunny - to use in time for the Easter weekend.

This means you can come up from Junction Square or South St, or from Church St through McHargs Lane, or from the corner of Mann Central to cross and access both sides of this area of High St at the crossing. And you can pat an echidna along the way.

We know the road looks like it is ready to drive on, however, it is not yet safe to do so. There is still the lighting to be signed off on and switched on and some final landscaping to be completed.

  • Echidnas installed
    March 27, 2019
Two new residents moved into High St today!

The Parent and Baby echidnas will look over people as they use the pedestrian crossing in the northern end of High St and you will be able to sit and have a yarn with Papa or Mama echidna.

Sculptor Dean Bowen oversaw their arrival to Wodonga today. And keep an eye out for the new High St sign and seating. The work is part of the Federal Government National Stronger Regions funding which the council received for the city centre revitalisation.

  • Intersection open
    February 20, 2018
The High and South streets intersection is now open.

  • Intersection update
    February 2, 2018
The intersection works are progressing well. However, on excavating the traffic signals, it was found that the existing infrastructure was in poor condition and unable to be reused for the new build.

This means all the inground infrastructure for the traffic signals is being replaced, leading to a possible extension of these works of up to two weeks, subject to weather.

Unfortunately, there was no indication of the extent of the issues which only became apparent after excavation commenced.

The overall project timeline remains unchanged.

  • Works update
    January 25, 2018
The diggers have made good progress in High St in the first three weeks of this stage of works.

Works will now focus on completing the underground services and preparing the road surface.

  • Northern end works begin
    January 15, 2018
Works will begin today (Monday, January 15, 2018) in the northern end of High St. The section of High St between South St and Elgin Boulevard will be closed to vehicular traffic. Pedestrian access will remain at all times.

The intersection of High and South streets will be closed for about four weeks, subject to weather, while the intersection is reconstructed.
