Actress and '70s pop queen launches Senior Celebrations

7 Oct, 2019

Popular singer Colleen Hewett, who was named Queen of Pop two years running, will launch Wodonga Council’s Senior Celebrations this morning.

Wodonga Council is kicking off its festival from October 7 to 16 with a free performance at The Cube Wodonga from 11am by the talented singer.

Hewett’s hit songs include Super Star and Day by Day, which hit gold record status.

Her talent spread to acting with Hewett starring in loved television dramas such as Prisoner, Flying Doctors and Truckies.

Hewett also starred alongside Hugh Jackman in the stage show of The Boy from Oz.

“It’s fantastic to have Colleen Hewett kick off this year’s Senior Celebrations,” Wodonga Mayor Cr Anna Speedie said.

Cr Speedie urged senior residents to look through the program and book into any other events or activities to secure their place.

“It will be great to see senior members of our community participating in new activities while socialising,” she said.

Cr Speedie said it was important to celebrate and recognise the rich contributions that older people make within our community each year.

“There are a lot of older residents who count down to this festival each year and it’s our pleasure to host this event,” she said.

There are 101 activities this year including 31 new activities and 44 participating businesses.

One event that is sure to be popular again is the car rally and treasure hunt on October 12 from 10am to 2pm.

This free event involves organising a car to complete a course, earning points for answering questions and collecting treasure on the way.

Kick off your shoes for a game of barefoot bowls followed by a two-course meal and entertainment by Gaven Slater with his classic rock 'n' roll dance tunes at the Wodonga Bowling Club on October 13 from 12.30pm to 3.30pm.

If you enjoy a surprise, book in for the Mystery Movie Morning at Regent Cinemas on October 15 from 10am.

Enjoy a trip down memory lane to the 1920s, 40s, 50s and 60s and beyond with qualified dancer and choreographer Charli Ivic. Come along to the Wodonga Bowling Club on October 10 from 1.30pm to 3.30pm and watch magical routines and join in the fun. Dress up in your favourite dance era outfit (optional) with prizes to be won.

A concert with popular rock ‘n’ roll performer Rodney Vincent at The Cube Wodonga on October 14 is already booked out.

For those who don't drive, there's the option of a community bus service to attend the events.
