Freshly painted piano brings sense of belonging

18 Nov, 2021

Experiencing the hard times and looking to the future with the promise of new growth is the concept behind the latest artwork covering The Cube courtyard piano.

Border artist Vicki Luke spent 100 hours working on the intricate image of bare branches against a bright winter’s day.

“The naked branches imply the slumbering of winter and in turn the onset of new life and growth in spring,” she said.

“This image acknowledges the hard times we have just experienced and looks to the future with the promise of new growth.”

Titled Belonging, Vicki thought about the design at the start of the COVID pandemic.

“In these uncertain times nature is ever present,” she said.

“It’s about the isolation we all experienced over the past 18 months.

“Communities are now getting together when they can and when it’s safe and actually enjoying life and that’s what this painting is about – it’s about renewal.”

Vicki said Wodonga Council’s ephemeral art project was a great concept.

“It’s a generous gift, inviting people to come and play and enjoy the artwork," she said.

“With this in mind, I wanted to make it as beautiful as I could.”

The piano is available to play in the courtyard from 10am to 4pm Monday to Friday.
