Festival fever to hit Junction Place

12 Feb, 2020

Wodonga's Junction Place will come alive with international circus acts, aerial performers and roving entertainment as part of the Upstream Street Party on March 7.

Join the party as performers, food and drink stalls and activities are set up in a number of locations around Junction Place, including Richardson Park, The Promenade, Junction Square and Church Street between 5pm to 9pm.

Wodonga Council's manager cultural services Kim Strang is encouraging people to come along and explore the street party and take in the myriad of music, arts and culture experiences.

"We are thrilled to host a festival that is unique to the Border and has something for all ages," she said.

"Upstream runs over four days and across two cities (Albury and Wodonga) so there's plenty of opportunities to take part in the amazing festival."

It will be hard to miss The Three Belles - Presented by Strange Fruit - perched atop five-metre sway poles in Richardson Park.

With three performances, (5.15pm, 6.40pm and 8.05pm) The Three Belles will enchant audiences with a whirlwind of dance.

Relax on the grass in Junction Square while enjoying some delicious food and wine and being mesmerised by Alex Sanson's colourful, kinetic sculpture Spherophyte (which is in near-constant motion).

Be sure to drip a droplet into the Flow States installation in Junction Square, which is inspired by the Murray River. Work with artists Alex Sanson and Nici Wright to create a river sculpture of hundreds of droplets of tissue paper. Suspended in a meandering stream, everyone can immerse themselves in the floating, swirling droplets.

Take a stroll down further to see a series of neon activities. Enter the Neon Forest, an immersive space of objects, lighting and sound. Navigate through neon tree tops, explore a forest of bendy glow wires or find hidden objects.

Create accessories using recycled neon materials then enter the neon photo booth where you can pose and play with your creations and see them glow.

Be part of the zine craze, drop-in zine workshops and badge making will run throughout the street party thanks to Wodonga Library working with Melbourne-based Sticky Institute to present Zine Fair.

We even have something for those who enjoy the creepy and the kooky - Nightmare is an eight-minute puppet and sensory experience performed inside a horse float to an intimate audience of eight.

Walk on over to the Junction Square gantry at either 5.45pm or 7.30pm to follow three performers in an extraordinary journey with ariels from the gantry. Their inspiration comes from the unique site and structure and draws connections to the Murray River and the many small islands and mud channels the meandering river flows around.

Roll up, roll up for the Alkazar performance tent in Junction Square, which seats 100 people. Enjoy rotating performances from a magician, comedian, the Albury Wodonga Victory Women's Group and PROJECTion Dance to name a few.

Don't forget to cast your vote in the Upstream Small Sculpture Prize when you stop by The Goods Shed, off Church St, to see the sculpture exhibition that celebrates the beauty of small three-dimensional artworks.

The winners of the three categories will be decided via people's choice. Voting closes at 6.30pm and the winner announced at 7.30pm.
