Library love letters

12 Feb, 2019

Bette Cawood remembers when Wodonga Library was about a third of its current size and there was no adjoining art gallery and certainly no computers.

That was when she moved to Wodonga 44 years ago.

As part of Library Lovers' Day on February 14, the Friends of the Wodonga Library President will be among those who will write a letter detailing her fond memories of the library.

Residents are encouraged to do the same and drop them into the library between now and when it closes later this year to be demolished to make way for the new cultural precinct.

The letters will be kept in a time capsule inside the new library.

"I plan to write about how much I will miss the library but I am excited for the new library, more programs and the larger space," Mrs Cawood said.

"My earliest memory of the library is visiting with my eldest son.

"My four sons all used to come here a lot while growing up and a lot has changed over the years.

"The library was a lot smaller and there was no Arts Space here, there wasn't as many books and certainly no computers or meeting rooms.

"There are some things that have remained the same - the great atmosphere and friendly staff."

On Wednesdays, like clockwork, Mrs Cawood can be found at the library for book club.

"I have been part of the Rose Book Club for 15 years now and we used to go out for dinner afterwards, which we still do to this day," she said.

It's safe to say that Mrs Cawood loves her library and we are sure there are many more out there.

Join other library lovers for a morning tea from 10.30am to noon to mark Library Lovers' Day. There will also be a letter writing station and some special activities highlighting the many ways Libraries Change Lives.

The library's team leader, Michelle Fracaro is encouraging residents to be a part of the last Library Lovers' Day at the current library.

"It's bittersweet," she said.

"It will be our last one here because we will have a new library."
