Lost in time and space

24 Aug, 2022

Albury artist Donna Caffrey enjoys becoming lost in time and “totally absorbed” in the process of her creative work.

Ms Caffrey is the latest artist to exhibit her work in The Cube Lightboxes as part of council’s Open Galleries ephemeral art program that gives local artists a chance to showcase their work to the public.

“I’m excited to have my works here in a public space where people can just see them, you don’t have to actually go anywhere in particular,” she said.

“I just love Wodonga’s public art, you walk down the street and see sculptures and, in all honesty, I didn’t think I would get to this point because such amazing artists have their work up in this space.”

Ms Caffrey, who has a background in embroidery, has been enjoying mixed media art.

“It would be my happy spot if I could put everything on the one page so I do tend to mix up my collage with fabrics and stitch on either paper or fabric,” she said.

“The series I have here at The Cube are true mixed media, so I have paint, material and paper.”

Ms Caffrey runs local mixed media workshops and says, “everybody can do it”.

“You don’t have to be Picasso and you don’t have to be able to draw to do collage, you just have to be brave,” she said.

Her series of three artworks on the side of The Cube - titled Lost in Time and Space - reflect Covid times.

“During Covid we weren’t going anywhere or doing anything and these artworks kind of reflect that time,” she said.

“Also when I start working on artworks, I get lost in time and space and, for me, it’s the ultimate meditative practice because you get totally absorbed and you are in the zone.

“When working on a collage I will think, 'What if I put this element here?' That element, together with others, may be moved about for a number of hours over a period of days before it is affixed.”

In the course of making one work, an idea will spring to mind for another.

"I become immersed in the process and think about other worlds, other places and other times," Ms Caffrey said.

The artworks will be on display until the end of December.
