Wodonga Council supports moves and calls on all levels of government to determine the most effective infrastructure required on a greenfield site and commit to to deliver improved health services to the Albury-Wodonga region.
Albury Wodonga provides important health services for Albury-Wodonga and the wider region. Increased demand for health services is expected, as the community ages and delivers an increase in the proportion of the region’s population with more complex health care needs.
It is a unique cross-border health service that operates under the jurisdiction of the Victorian Department of Health. Providing the best of health to more than 250,000 people, across an area spanning North East Victoria to Southern NSW, AWH has grown to be the second-largest regional health service in Victoria and provides healthcare services comparable to metropolitan centres.
Health service provision for the Albury-Wodonga region is affected by the state border and the fragmented network of providers. To meet the future growth needs of this regional community of more than 250,000 people, there is a need to plan and deliver and increased and expanded provision of specialist care and local services to cater to our large catchment area.
The development of state-of-the-art facilities with increased specialist service offerings will attract more specialists to the region, as well as research opportunities. High quality healthcare, combined with increased job opportunities, will result in increased residential and economic investment in the region.
Redevelopment offers the opportunity to strengthen links with defence medics and education with the potential to build a health precinct including allied health providers. This precinct would provide training and support through the significant local Defence presence and link with local university and TAFE campuses.
