Wodonga Council holds four citizenship ceremonies per year to welcome new citizens on behalf of the Department of Home Affairs (the Department).

The Department organises all citizenship applications, approvals and allocates new citizens to Citizenship Ceremonies. For information on how to apply to become an Australian Citizen, please visit Department of Home Affairs

Once your citizenship application has been approved, the Department will send you an official invitation to an upcoming ceremony.

2026 ceremony dates:

  • Monday, January 26 (Australia Day)
  • Wednedsay, April 15
  • Wednesday, July 8
  • Thursday, September 17 (Australian Citizenship Day)

About the ceremony:

The ceremonies are held at The Cube Wodonga (118 Hovell St, Wodonga) from 5pm to 6.30pm. Registrations open from 4.15pm to 5pm.

Upon arrival, find the registration table for check in and to receive your information pack. Please arrive on time, registrations for the ceremony will close once the ceremony begins.

The ceremony will take between between 45 minutes to an hour and will include the following.

  • A formal introduction 
  • Speeches
  • An address to participants
  • The pledge of commitment 
  • Certificate ceremony
  • Affirmation pledge
  • National Anthem 

Light refreshments will be provided in the foyer following the ceremony. New citizens are encouraged to take photos with their certificates and officials after the ceremony.

Australia day

The Australia Day ceremony also recognises and celebrates the hard work of individuals and community groups within our community. Alongside the ceremony, the council holds its Australia Day Awards, recognising the follow recipients. 

  • Wodonga's Citizen of the Year; 
  • Wodonga’s Young Citizen of the Year; and,
  • Wodonga’s Community Organisation of the Year.
 
Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
What form of identification do I bring?

You will need to bring one of the following forms of photo identification to the ceremony. 

  • driver's license
  • passport, or 
  • an official document with a photograph 

If you do not have photo identification, bring at least three (3) documents showing your name, address and signature, and your invitation to the ceremony.

  • bank statement
  • utility bill
  • credit card statement 
Can I bring guests?

We encourage new citizens to bring guests and loved ones to witness and celebrate the occasion. Each new citizen can bring up to 10 guests.For groups larger then 10, please contact the events team via [email protected] 

Dress Code

The ceremony is an important event where you make a commitment to our country. You and your guests should be dressed in formal or smart casual clothing, or your national or cultural dress, and groomed to reflect its significance.

Who should attend

You need to attend a citizenship ceremony if you:

  • were 16 years or older when you applied, and
  • do not have a permanent or enduring incapacity.

You will not become an Australian citizen until you have made the pledge of commitment to Australia.

You will receive an invitation to attend a ceremony after your application is approved. The time between the approval of your application and your ceremony can vary. For the most up-to-date information, see Citizenship processing times.

Unable to attend

If you cannot attend your citizenship ceremony, please contact the Department and they will send you a non-attendance letter outlining next steps. You may have to wait before you receive another invitation as places at ceremonies are limited. You do not need to contact us. You do not need to contact Wodonga Council.

If you do not attend a ceremony within 12 months of your approval, we may cancel your approval if you do not provide an acceptable reason as outlined in citizenship legislation or policy, supported by satisfactory evidence.
 

Enrolling to vote in elections

At the ceremony, all new citizens aged 16 and over will receive an Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) enrol-to-vote information sheet with a QR code to assist in enrolling to vote online.

You may also:

  • get an enrolment form at any AEC office
  • call the AEC to request a form or
  • visit the AEC website to enrol online.
