Huon Hill reopens after fire

24 Jan, 2019

Road access to Huon Hill will be reopened today as fire crews are released following Tuesday afternoon's fire.

The fire on the steep sides of Huon Hill was one of many in the district started by lightning and burnt nine hectares.

Other fires have also been made safe in the Burrowye, Tallangatta, Gundowring, and Sandy Creek areas.

It’s a timely warning to Wodonga residents that fires can start anywhere at any time close to towns and houses. Everyone living, working or visiting parks on or near the edge of town needs to have a plan for bushfire.

The Huon Hill fire was only a few kilometres from the centre of Wodonga.

The first step is to download the VicEmergency App and be aware of the fire danger ratings each day. Properties and individuals need to be prepared, it’s important to have a conversation with family and colleagues about what each person will do in the event of a nearby fire.

Find further information at cfa.vic.gov.au/plan-prepare.

The fire danger rating will be Very High in the North East on Friday, Severe in the North Central and Extreme in the Northern Country.

A Total Fire Ban has been declared for Victoria tomorrow, Friday, January 25.
