Soft Entropy: Where Gods Exist by Chaco Kato

10 Sep, 2026

Opening Friday, October 16.

Soft Entropy: Where Gods Exist is a site responsive installation by Japanese born, Melbourne-based artist Chaco Kato.

The work will transform Hyphen's Artspace Gallery into a vibrant, living field where the ordinary becomes strange, poetic and full of possibilities.

Bringing together found and discarded materials such as vines, twigs, fallen branches, industrial pipes, yarn remnants, stitched fragments and fruit seeds, the installation explores how materials and the worlds around us are constantly changing. Through weaving and “broad textiling”, Chaco reimagines familiar objects into a shifting landscape that explores the raw immediacy of everyday life with the soft architecture of change.

Rooted in a “Zen Punk” spirit, Soft Entropy: Where Gods Exist embraces the tension between delicacy and disorder, beauty and debris, permanence and impermanence. In this place, nothing is simply waste and nothing is entirely fixed. Instead, the gallery becomes a place where endless relationships, stories and possibilities emerge, an ecosystem in which “millions of gods” exist.
