Review of councillor and mayoral allowances

Mayors and councillors are entitled to receive an allowance while performing their duties as an elected official.

Under the Local Government Act 1989, which applies in this instance, the council is required to review and determine the level of mayoral and councillor allowances within the period of six months after a general election or by the next June 30, whichever is later.

Wodonga councillors and the mayor are currently being paid the maximum amount for a category two council being $26,245 and $81,204 respectively.

There is also a legislative requirement for an amount equivalent to the superannuation contribution (currently 9.5 per cent and increasing to 10 per cent from July 1) to be paid in addition to the allowance.

The allowance set through this process will remain in effect for the full term of the council being 2020-2024 subject to an annual review by the Minister for Local Government or a Determination by the Victorian Independent Remuneration Tribunal.

For more information, please refer to the May council meeting report on Review of Councillor and Mayoral Allowances.
