Studies suggest about half of all women who leave an abusive relationship ultimately reunite with their partner.
A four-week program at Felltimber Community Centre aims to give women who have stepped out against violence; knowledge, skills and confidence to break the cycle permanently for themselves and their children.
Women of Courage program facilitator Kylie Bonnor said the program was about empowering and supporting women.
"It's about equipping women with tools to live a safer and happier life," she said.
"It's unfortunate but statistics show that many domestic violence victims will return to their abusive partner or enter into another abusive relationship in the future."
The Parliament of Australia website states that while there is no single cause that leads to domestic violence, there are a number of risk factors associated with perpetrators and victims of domestic violence.
For example, perpetrators’ alcohol and drug use, and victims’ experience of child abuse, pregnancy and separation may all increase the risk of domestic violence.
Financial stress, personal stress and lack of social support are also strong correlates of violence against women.
Ms Bonnor, who is an experienced women’s empowerment facilitator, said the program was designed to support those who have suffered family violence and will provide support and guidance for women to heal and move onto a happier life.
The program will run from Tuesday, October 29 to November 19 between 12.30pm to 2.30pm.
Over the four weeks, participants will work together to build a social network with each other.
The program will involve written work as well as hands on activities with a focus on personal development for the participants.
Program attendance is by application only and applications are due by October 14.
* This program is not suitable for those currently in crisis or recently having experienced domestic violence related trauma.
The program will culminate with an event - Stronger Together - inviting members of the community to come and celebrate the achievements of the Women of Courage, as we support their growth and encourage them towards their next steps in their future.
Stronger Together will be held on Friday, November 22 at the Felltimber Community Centre from 6.30pm to 8.30pm.
