A big shout out to all the organisations awarded under the February community impact and partnership grants.
The community impact grants are aimed at building the capacity of community groups and organisations to improve the social, environmental, cultural and economic outcomes for Wodonga residents.
The Awarded applicants are:
Warrior Dragon Boat Club Inc for their annual school community dragon boat event
- A one – day Dragon Boat event solely hosted and funded, with support, by Warrior Dragons on Gateway Lakes. A wide diverse group of students (over 200) from schools in the local region are invited to participate in land exercises and on-water training under the supervision of our qualified coaches.
Turtles Albury Wodonga for their turtles nesting protection and conservation program
- This project aims to raise community awareness around the Turtles in Sumsion Gardens. The Broadshelled Turtle which is an endangered species, the Murray River Turtle which is listed as Vulnerable and the Eastern Long Neck Turtle which is currently listed as data-deficient.
Renewable Albury Wodonga Energy (RAW Energy) to assist in promoting renewable energy better locally
- This project aims to capitalize on the success of RAW Energy's previous and current projects to implement a strategy to market and promote our activities better within the Wodonga community. Currently, the committee is implementing projects such as the Wodonga Community Solar Project and the Energy Benefits Program. This funding will help promote these projects and encourage more community members to link to our projects.
Uniting Wodonga for the Emergency Relief Sustainability Forum
- This forum will be aligned with a current state paper to inform strategic planning with other emergency relief providers and stakeholders regarding the sustainability of the collective.
Trudewind Rd Neighbourhood House for a new defibrillator
- The Neighbourhood House conducts a range of weekly classes, groups and activities, primarily to the senior community, approximately 150 people per week. The committee will purchase a defibrillator in case of an incident on-site or if required by Koori First Steps Pre-School located next door.
Gateway Health for the It’s Time We Talked forum
- The project aims to build stronger communities via capacity building in response to the impact pornography is having on young people, in particular gender equality and sexual health. A training series will take place in May 2019. Workshops will be undertaken with local teachers, health professionals, parents and community.
Border Bushwalking Club for first aid training
- Border Bushwalking Club will train leaders in First Aid so that participants in Club activities who require first aid attention may be dealt with effectively and efficiently.
David Winterbottom Park group for their park entrance
- This funding will go towards the provision of a main entrance to the park from Stranger Court. The provision of a formal entrance to the Park onto access paths and pleasant surrounds which the Park offers and enhances the assets of Wodonga and encourages community use.
Murray Valley Sanctuary Refugee Group for their swim skills for culturally diverse young people.
- This is an initiative sustained through a partnership of the group, Wodonga Senior Secondary College and Albury-Wodonga Ethnic Communities Council. It aims to address a vital and urgent community need; improving the skills, confidence and safety of culturally diverse young people around water.
The Salvation Army Wodonga for their initiative to assist with the transportation of children
- This funding assisted with providing 10 toddler and infant car seats needed to transport young people with parents, carers of families who are connecting through the Emergency Relief Doorways program for families including refugee families who are settling into Wodonga and Out Reach Programs.
Albury Wodonga WoodCrafters for their community open day
- This will be a two part project to promote the group .to the community and to possibly recruit new Female and Male members. The objective is to hold an "Open day / come and try day" during the week at the workshop, followed by a demonstration display day at the Cottage on a later Saturday.
Bonegilla Hall Committee for their Quilt and Craft Show
- The committee aim to host a regular Quilt and Craft show at Bonegilla Hall. This year with better advertising, additional lighting, display accessories and food available they hope to build it as a recurring sustainable event. The craft group is a diverse community group which is growing within the local and wider community.
3rd Wodonga Scout Group for fencing at their facility
The group plan to fence off an area of the car park in order to conduct outdoor activities safely. Currently there is no fencing between the hall and the road which represents a safety issue. Additionally, it would open up opportunities to host overnight camping at the hall in an effort to reduce costs for our youth members, and maximise their experiences.
Description Victoria
- For their art inclusion workshop which will develop the capacity of local artists and art works to work with people who are blind.
Wodonga Raiders Junior Football Club
- For their building safe sporting communities which will support volunteers in local sporting clubs to provide a safe sporting environment for junior and women's football players by providing access to training and increasing the number of qualified first aid volunteers.
St John Ambulance Australia
- For their first aid in schools program which teaches primary school and kindergarten aged children about the basics in First Aid and how to safely and adequately respond in an emergency. The program will be delivered to eight primary schools and kindergartens in Wodonga.
We also have one recipient under the community partnership grant which includes funding over the next three years.
- North East Local Learning and Employment Network (NELLEN) for the Wodonga project, a community of schools and services.
- The Wodonga Project is set to replicate the early intervention practice established in Geelong in 2010 using a Community of Schools and Services (COSS) Model. In 2012, the Geelong Early Intervention Working Group became formally known as The Geelong Project.
- Involving schools and agencies in Woodnga, the key activities of the project’s implementation in Wodonga include population screening, systemic collaboration and a constant and coordinated feedback loop of data and outcomes.
