The Australian Taxation Office - Tax Help Program

What you need to know

  • The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) asked us to share a program they have to help low income earners.
  • The Tax Help program is a network of ATO-trained community volunteers.
  • Volunteers provide a free and confidential service to help people complete their tax returns online using myTax through myGov.
  • Tax Help is for people earning $60,000 or less with simple tax affairs.
  • It runs from the end of July to October in all capital cities and many regional areas across Australia.
  • Tax Help isn’t available for all customers. For example, they won’t be eligible if they:
  • work as contractors, i.e. a contract cleaner or taxi driver
  • run a business, including as a sole trader
  • sell shares or have an investment property
  • own a rental property.

Customers can phone 13 28 61 for the cost of a local call to check if they’re eligible.

  • COVID-19 has changed the way the service is delivered. This year selected volunteers can help either online, face-to-face or on the phone in selected centres.
  • A list of Tax Help centre locations will be available on the ATO website from 20 July. People can also call 13 28 61 to find a suitable location and make an appointment with a volunteer.
  • Some centres have volunteers that can provide advice in language, but this depends on the volunteers present at the time. People can call 13 28 61 to find out times and dates for their language.

What customers need to do
