YAS winners flourishing

18 Feb, 2020

Wodonga Council is pleased to announce there were two deserving winners of the February YAS award.

The Young Achiever Scheme is aimed at assisting young people in their pursuits to participate at a state or national level for activities, events or competitions.

The recipients were Charlie Erlewein and Tahli Smith.

Charlie, at just seven years old, is a remarkable young girl who came to one of council’s community forums late last year and addressed the crowd about the importance of council adopting the single-use plastics policy.

Charlie, who is a turtle ambassador, showed a distressing video at the community forum featuring the removal of a plastic straw from a sea turtle’s nostril.

Now Charlie is planning to attend a Straw No More Bassador conference in March.

Charlie hopes to broaden her public speaking skills and get up-to-date with the latest information on places where single-use plastics policies have been adopted in councils and schools throughout Australia.

Charlie will use this information and bring back skills to educate other schools and communities.

Our other recipient is 14-year-old Tahli Smith who has been playing representative basketball for six years.

This is the third year she has played in the Country Cup Victoria tournament and this year came second in the grand final.

At the recent Bendigo Basketball Junior Classic, her team won the grand final.
