There will be a spotlight on gender equity in the workplace on February 14 as people from all walks of life join in on the conversation throughout the day.
There will be four events taking place on the day at The Cube Wodonga: a business breakfast (sold out), a masterclass for leaders and human resources specialists in gender equity (sold out) and two consultations for the National Inquiry into Sexual Harassment in the Workplace.
The day will start with a business breakfast at The Cube Wodonga featuring Kate Jenkins, National Sex Discrimination Commissioner who will speak about her work and the current national inquiry into sex discrimination in the workplace.
ABC’s Gaye Pattison will MC the event.
Lieutenant Colonel Tim Stone, Commanding Officer at the Australian Defence Force, will also attend the breakfast to speak about the defence force's sustained efforts at the local base for gender equality in a male-dominated environment under the Pathways to Change initiative.
Wodonga Council partnered with Women’s Health Goulbourn North East to put on the breakfast.
The breakfast will be followed by the masterclass, which will provide individuals with the adaptive frameworks and practical tools leaders need to prevent sexual harassment in contemporary workplaces.
As we all work toward recruiting, retaining and promoting the best and brightest, this masterclass will connect you with the latest thinking on why gender equity is good for workplaces and better for business.
Gender equality in Australia is currently the subject of a large and diverse conversation - we are seeing shifts we never would have seen a decade ago, such as an increasing focus on the achievements of women in sport and the recognition of domestic violence as a workplace issue.
In the World Economic Forum’s 2018 Gender Gap Report, Australia ranked number one for educational attainment. Yet that same report ranked Australia 39th for overall gender equality due to low levels of economic participation and political empowerment.
These misalignments signal the need for an increase in our efforts and priorities.
Workplaces are key to driving cultural change, and their networks allow for broad reach into the community and present opportunities to have a significant impact; not only on individuals but on the success and productivity of local businesses and communities at large.
NATIONAL INQUIRY INTO SEXUAL HARRASSMENT IN AUSTRALIAN WORKPLACES
The Australian Human Rights Commission is conducting a national inquiry into sexual harassment in Australian workplaces. The commission is interested in consulting all relevant stakeholders in Albury Wodonga to ensure the national inquiry gains an in-depth understanding of the concerns and experiences of different groups. Tea, coffee and light refreshments will be available during these sessions.
