What are the health standards and requirements that health businesses must comply with?

A guidance document has been developed by the Department of Health regarding acceptable health practices for personal care and body art industries.


How much does it cost to register?

All fees are outlined on the relevant application forms and are subject to change on July 1 each year.

Why do I need to register my health business with the council?

The Public Health and Wellbeing Act 2008 outlines that certain health businesses must register with their local council.

Are there any health businesses that are exempt from registering?

Yes, the following health businesses are exempt from the requirements to be registered:

  • Dentists;
  • Medicals practitioners;
  • Nurses;
  • Podiatrists;
  • Acupuncturists;
  • Pathology services;
  • Non-pathology analysis businesses; and
  • Hospitals/health centres.

What happens if a health premise fails to register with the council?

Failure to register a required health premises is an offence under section 69 (1) of the Public Health and Wellbeing Act 2008. The proprietor is liable to an infringement penalty notice or prosecution.
