It's time to walk to school

10 Oct, 2019

Wodonga Council is teaming up with Wodonga schools for Walk to School month – a fun and creative way to teach kids the benefits of active travel.

Kicking off from October 7, nine Wodonga primary schools have signed up to this year’s program.

Students can also join the program individually or with friends – so it’s easy for kids to get active, even if their school isn’t formally involved.

Wodonga Council deputy mayor Cr Kat Bennett said Walk to School was an important initiative to get schoolchildren involved in.

“Schools have found that the kids who walk to school are more focused during their school day,” she said.

"Getting children to walk, ride or scoot to school is an easy way to get them active and healthy.

“We know a lot of people don’t get enough physical activity so the more we build these good habits from a young age, the better.

"It’s been so exciting to see Wodonga's participation in Walk to School continue to grow each October.”

Walking, riding or scooting to school not only reduces traffic – a big plus for the environment – but it’s also a good way for kids to make friends, keep healthy and to get the 60 minutes of recommended daily activity they need.

Last year, more than 140,000 Victorian primary school kids got involved.
