Brian Mitchell new Wodonga Councillor after countback

14 Jan, 2019

New Wodonga Councillor Brian Mitchell vowed to do his best to serve the community after being appointed to the role on a countback this morning.

Mr Mitchell replaces Tim Quilty who resigned from the council in December after being elected to the Victorian Upper House.

Returning Officer Katrina Collins conducted the countback from a possible 17 eligible candidates.

The countback involved the distribution of 3492 ballot papers received by Cr Quilty from the October 2016 general election.

After the distribution of preferences, an absolute majority of votes was obtained by Brian Mitchell.

“I came here just to observe the results, I really didn’t expect to be the successful candidate,” he said.

Mr Mitchell will fill the extraordinary vacancy for Wodonga Council until the next election of council.

“Thank you very much, I am honoured,” he said after the announcement.

“I will do my best to serve the community.”
