Pattern explored in latest exhibition

31 Jan, 2019

Well-known Border artist Mary-Jane Griggs is on a hiatus from working with paint, instead dabbling with Derwent pencils in her latest exhibition at Arts Space Wodonga.

Graphia is the outcome of three years working with pattern.

"I have been researching pattern globally, especially Islamic pattern," Griggs said.

Griggs' initial experimentation with pattern occurred each evening, outside the studio, sitting and making small works that grew to total 800.

"I did all of them on my lap inside, it changed my whole practice because I wasn't going into the studio," she said.

"I was doing it all inside the house, on the dining room table and it made it easy to do.

"These works also grew out of re-discovering how much I loved playing with pencils."

Griggs, who is the Head of Art at Albury TAFE, said she enjoyed taking a step back from working with paint.

"It's like doodling and there's no preconceptions, it's very relaxing," she said.

Graphia is her 18th solo show on the Border.

Graphia refers to a hard point or stylus that incises the surface. In this show, that surface is soft and heavy paper. Working quickly, patterns spread from larger to smaller shapes that were in term filled with more pattern.

There will be an artist talk on Saturday, February 9 at 10am. Free morning tea provided.
