On February 13, 2008, then Prime Minister Kevin Rudd formally acknowledged the suffering caused by decades of mistreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
It was one of the defining moments in modern Australian history.
The day is now etched in the nation’s history as a pivotal turning point in achieving reconciliation.

Two years ago the Wodonga Aboriginal Network (WAN) presented Wodonga Council with a framed version of the national apology (pictured), which is proudly on display at the council offices.
In 2016, the council adopted the Wodonga Aboriginal Reconciliation Plan which aims to build on the strengths of the council’s achievements in actively advancing reconciliation.
It comes ahead of National Sorry Day which is held on May 26.
The annual event remembers and commemorates the mistreatment of the country’s indigenous population.
