Changes to rate payment dates in 2009

WODONGA Council has introduced a new due date for those wishing to pay their rates with one payment in the 2009-2010 financial year.

If you prefer to pay your rates in one payment, from 2009-2010 onward you may pre-pay all four instalments by September 30 of each year. You can also pay any combination of instalments before the due date/s. Please note that there will be no provision to pay in full at a later date.

For 2009-2010 rates this means that:

  • A rates notice will be issued around August, 2009;
  • First instalment payments will be due on September 30, 2009; or
  • You may choose to pay all four instalments by September 30, 2009.

Council will continue to send instalment reminder notices prior to the subsequent instalment dates, which are:

  • November 30;
  • February 28 or February 29 in a leap year; and
  • May 31 (or the next working day, if a date falls on a weekend or public holiday).
WHY IS THIS BEING DONE?

Rates notices are usually issued each August. For those who chose to pay their rates in full, there was a long period between receiving the rate notice and the due date.

This sometimes led to the payment being overlooked and interest being charged over several months. By receiving the notice in August and the payment being due in September, this reduces the chance of this happening.

Ratepayers who miss the September 30 full payment date will automatically be converted to the instalment payment option with interest being charged until the first instalment payment is received.

HOW CAN I PAY MY RATES?

There are several ways to pay your rates. These include BPAY, Direct Debit, Phone Banking, Internet, Cheque, at Post Offices and Council's Hovell Street office.

In the 2009-2010 financial year, council is introducing a direct debit facility. Upon application, ratepayers will be able to pay by direct debit from their nominated bank account for either the full amount owing; quarterly instalments as per the due dates; or by nine equal instalments from September to May each year to occur on the 20th calendar day of those months.  Please click here to download the rates direct debit application form.

In the meantime, if you have any queries about your rates please contact the council's customer service team on (02) 6022 9300.
