Fire in the Belly Festival

Posted: 05/10/2009

The Fire in the Belly Festival will shimmy and shake its way back again to the Border region this month.

The bellydance festival is for anyone wanting to experience this exotic dance form right here in our own backyard.

Workshops taught by accomplished teachers will be held over the weekend to bring new and exciting techniques for those at the beginner level through to the more experienced dancers who just keep wanting more.

“We have been extremely fortunate this year to be supported by the Wodonga City Council,' said organiser Isabelle Swanson.

The first Fire in the Belly Festival was held in Mooroopna in 1997 to allow rural women an opportunity to share their love of the dance without having to travel to the capital cities.

Participants and teachers are travelling from near and far, including Canberra, Melbourne, Bendigo, Ballarat, Sydney, Adelaide, and the Blue Mountains.

“The weekend will “hipshake” off with a welcoming Hafla (party) on the Friday night at a local Wodonga restaurant.,' she said.

“Two hour workshops held at the Wodonga Civic Centre will run from 9am through till 5pm on Saturday, and 10am to noon on Sunday.

“ The famous “Souk” (market place) which operates between 10am and 3pm on Saturday at the Civic Centre, promises to entice you into buying sparkling jewels, aromatic perfumes and exotic costumes.

“You may even catch an impromptu performance or two during the day.”

“The Saturday Night Cabaret Hafla will feature performances by our best loved teachers, a dance competition for our participants, and even some time “free spirited” dancing to the beat of live drumming.'

Exciting competitions including best costume and maybe the longest shimmy will be held over the course of the weekend so come along with family and friends dressed in your finest sparkles to enjoy a fiery extravaganza that you can't afford to miss

The event runs from October 16 to 18.
