IF you have ever wanted to learn how to play the ukulele, now is your chance.
Renowned ukulele musician, Rose Turtle Ertler will host a workshop and concert at Arts Space Wodonga this Saturday to complete her Victorian ‘Sticks & Twigs' tour.
Ertler does not play her ukulele in the traditional Hawaiian style, but instead takes aspects of all styles she has encountered to create her own contemporary sound.
To help her demonstrate her versatility, Ertler is devoting more and more time to Australian touring.
In the last two years, she has performed extensively including tours from Wollongong to Cairns, from Sydney to Adelaide (via ACT) and Tasmania.
She has performed at festivals (Cygnet Folk Festival in Tasmania, Brunswick Music Feast in Melbourne and Coastfest in NSW, Electrofringe in Newcastle, Viva la Gong in Wollongong) as well as folk clubs, art centres, libraries, cafes and bars.
Ertler has toured Europe twice and last year was a featured performer at the New York Ukulele Festival.
Her current tour is supported by the Federal Government's Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts.
In concert, Ertler plays a delicate vintage Gretsch soprano ukulele, an American instrument made in the 1940s.
Some songs are played acoustically while for others, her ukulele is 'electrified', plugged into an effects pedal creating a more extensive palette of sounds.
Recently, Ertler has added a few songs to her repertoire that she plays on her father's old five-string banjo.
She has released three solo ukulele albums including Ping Pong Princess, Tryhard Trailer Trash and Ladybirds Of Crick Creek.
Her fourth album, entitled All For One From Now Til Dawn will be released in mid-2009 and is being funded by Arts Victoria.
Ertler will hold a beginners' ukulele workshop from 3pm to 5pm at Arts Space Wodonga this Saturday. The session costs $10.
This will be followed by a performance from 7pm to 9pm. Tickets cost $20 or $18 concession.
Bookings should be made at Arts Space Wodonga on (02) 6022 9600.
