New education hub officially named

THE new education hub to be built at White Box Rise Estate in Wodonga will be known as Southern Rise Education Centre.

The hub will see the relocation of Wodonga South Primary School and Wodonga Council's Strathmore St and Silva Drive preschools. Staff, the school council and the two preschool parent committees visited the site yesterday and were told about the new name.

While the hub will be known as Southern Rise Education Centre, Wodonga South Primary School will retain its name, and the preschool, childcare centre and maternal and child health centre will be known as the Southern Rise Children's Centre. A steering committee was established to oversee the transition to the new site, with the school and preschool communities invited to suggest suitable names for the new facility.

Wodonga South Primary School principal Anne Klock said some excellent suggestions were submitted.

“These suggestions were shortlisted to eight by the steering committee and again these names were sent out to the school and preschool communities for their feedback,” she said.

“The steering committee will now lead a consultative process to choose a motto and a logo for the facility. However, the school uniform colours at Wodonga South Primary School will remain the same.”

Ms Klock said school community members have been waiting years for this new school and it is now full steam ahead.

“I don't think that they will believe that we are actually getting one until they see the bricks and mortar being laid,” she said. “We will move across in the second half of 2010 and look forward to the wonderful new facilities and grounds. It will give the community a real boost and provide excellent learning opportunities for children.”

Council's director community development Patience Harrington said the project has been five years in the making.

“The hub concept came about after community consultation was conducted with families and local professionals in the early years' field,” she said. “Research showed the hub model has great outcomes and would give parents access to a number of services in the one location.”

Ms Harrington said it was a great opportunity for the council to work with the school.

“The new centre will value-add to the whole experience for children, with child care services from three-months-old to the completion of primary school,” she said.

Tenders for the project are anticipated to go out within months. The State Government has contributed funding to developing the hub at White Box Rise Estate.
