THERE are five worthy winners of this month’s Wodonga Council Young Achiever Support Scheme, which is aimed at assisting young people in their pursuits to participate at a state or national level for activities, events or competitions.
Wodonga Mayor Rodney Wangman said this month’s winners are soccer player Shannon Foden, golfer Catherine Odgers, basketballer Josip Matos, and hockey players Hugh and Fraser Cullen.
“We are lucky to have so many young people excelling in their chosen sport in the area,” he said.
Ms Foden, who has been a previous recipient of the scheme, has been selected as a member of the Victorian Secondary Schools football (soccer) team.
The team will compete in the School Sport Australia Championships, which are being held at Port Macquarie during August.
The annual event involves all states in Australia and a representative Australian team will be selected after the round robin competition.
The council wishes Ms Foden all the best for the championships.
Ms Odgers has been selected as a member of the Victorian Secondary Schools golf team.
The golf team will be heading to Rockhampton in August to compete.
Ms Odgers has had a range of achievements in golf recently including being part of the Victorian junior state team and being selected in the senior state training team.
Congratulations go to Ms Odgers on her achievements and council wishes her all the best for Rockhampton.
Mr Matos has received assistance through this program to attend a basketball academy camp.
Council wishes Mr Matos all the best in his basketball aspirations.
Hugh and Fraser Cullen are both keen hockey players and have both been selected to represent their state in their respective age groups.
Fraser has been selected in the under 13 boy’s development squad, which will compete at the Victorian Country Junior Hockey Championships at the end of June.
Hugh has been selected in the under 14 boys Victorian team, which will compete at the State Junior Championships in Melbourne later this month.
Council wishes both Hugh and Fraser all the best for these events.
