WODONGA Council adopted its 2008-2009 draft budget and 2006-2010 amended council plan at last night’s council meeting.
A public forum on the draft documents was held on June 2 and the documents were open for submissions until June 9.
The June edition of council’s CityLife publication outlined the key elements of both draft documents.
Three submissions were received on the draft budget and after consideration, no amendments were made to the draft budget before it was adopted.
No submissions were received on the amended council plan, which was adopted without further changes.
Wodonga Mayor Rodney Wangman said the budget is investing $62.6 million over the next two years into the future of the city.
“We have taken a financially responsible approach to delivering the services our community is seeking, keeping our existing assets in good condition, and securing outside funding wherever possible,” he said.
“A key component is to sell the remainder of the Logic industrial hub through a national expressions of interest process and use the profits generated to pay, firstly, council debt and then secondly, to make significant improvements to the city’s CBD and new community facilities.
“There is also a major emphasis on the renewal of existing assets within the next 10 years.”
Cr Wangman said the council plan outlines the vision for the city over a four-year period and reflects community views received through consultative processes such as annual surveys and community forums.
“The final year of the plan focuses on nine priority areas including community strengthening and wellbeing, community engagement and communication, marketing Wodonga, CBD redevelopment, sustainable development and the environment, Logic, housing affordability, arts and culture, and key projects,” he said.
“This plan along with the work contributing to the Community Plan 2033, will help the next council identify and provide a framework for the kind of city that we want in the future.”
