A TOTAL of 38 finalists will be given the red carpet treatment at the inaugural RED Carpet Youth Awards ceremony this Friday at 6.30pm at the Catholic College Wodonga auditorium.
The invite-only event will be attended by more than 200 people, with winners to be announced in 10 categories.
A total of 95 nominations were received for the awards, which were open to young people aged between 16 and 24 years.
The young advisory committee shortlisted the nominations in each category and helped organise the prizes from local businesses.
Manager community planning and youth services Jaime Carroll said the calibre of nominations from the community was overwhelming.
“It is the first year we have held the RED Carpet Youth Awards and it is terrific to see so many young people being publicly acknowledged for their positive contribution to our vibrant community,” she said.
Ms Carroll said the council has secured former magistrate Barbara Holborow as the guest speaker at the awards ceremony.
“Barbara is forthright and honest, and brings the wisdom and insight of years of experience as a mother, grandmother and professional to a problem that's not getting any better as the world moves at a new pace and children are under more pressure than ever,” she said.
“Her motto is that everyone in a community has a responsibility for every child.”
Ms Holborow served for 12 years as a magistrate in the children's court, where her compassion and outspokenness were legendary.
She specialised in children's cases and it was through her work at a women's refuge that she met Jacob, a young Aboriginal boy who she adopted.
Information on the finalists in the RED Carpet Youth Awards will go up on display in the Reflections On High wall from Thursday.
