There is no doubting the dedication of Col Fitzmaurice to the needy of Wodonga.
His work for homeless people at St Stephen's Uniting Church in Wodonga has seen him awarded the Wodonga Council Eagle Award for October.
Mr Fitzmaurice leads a team of men who gather food, clothing and necessary items for homeless people in a bid to make their life a little easier.
In presenting the award Wodonga Council Mayor Mark Byatt said this kind of work would be challenging for most people.
“This would be physical work for anyone, but handling tons of food is extremely demanding particularly for men in their late 70s and 80s,' he said.
“It is a real credit to Col and his team, the amount of effort they put into this very worthy cause.'
Mr Fitzmaurice and his team have converted a house into a storage depot, administration centre and distribution centre.
This has provided a facility for needy people to utilise a shower, with clean towels and toiletries available.
Mr Fitzmaurice and his team then clean the shower and launder the towels to ensure it is ready for the next influx of people coming in to use its services.
“I am looking forward to visiting the house in Nilmar Avenue to see for myself the sheer muscle power behind this venture,' said Cr Byatt.
“I think many of us would be surprised to witness the size of the task Col and his team tackle, and I congratulate them all for their foresight and dedication to our community.
If you know a Wodonga resident who is currently soaring high, nominate them by picking up a nomination form from council's Hovell St office or in the council's CityLife publication, online at www.wodonga.vic.gov.au or by phoning (02) 6022 9300.
