THE Stanley St fountains commenced flowing again this morning using purchased water for a 12-month trial period.
The two fountains were turned off due to water restrictions last year.
The recommendation to trial the fountains using purchased water was put to council at its April meeting by the High St Revitalisation Reference Group.
It was passed by council on the basis that they receive ongoing updates on both water usage and safety issues over the 12-month period.
Group member Dianne King said water levels will be monitored to determine water losses for both of the fountains.
“A regular inspection and cleaning regime of the fountains will be carried out to ensure they remain safe,” she said.
“Signage indicating that purchased, not reticulated, water is being used will be installed.”
Ms King said the fountain at the High St end had been blocked off to the public by bench seats since being turned off to reduce any danger to residents.
“By turning the fountains back on, they will be a great asset to the community,” she said.
“Many children enjoyed having the fountains on at the first season of Lounging On High and we hope to see people enjoying them next summer during the trial period.”
The chess set will also be available to the public during business opening hours, with Del and Matt Poppins from the Stanley St barber shop volunteering to set-up and pack-up the chess set.
They will be kept in boxes adjacent to the chess board at the High St end of Stanley St. The boxes have added more seating to the street as well as fun for all ages.
