Resource recovery trial to minimise waste

Posted: 19/01/2012

THE Waste Transfer Station will be conducting an intensive resource recovery trial in February and March this year, and is asking Wodonga residents to get on board and help reduce landfill.

Titled ‘Get It Sorted', the trial will involve some operational differences at the Kane Rd facility and may delay unloading.

Wodonga Council's waste management co-ordinator David Pinder said the aim of the trial is to reduce waste even further.

“Traditional ‘mixed' loads of waste cannot be unloaded without sorting,” he said.

“During this time, Recovery GAME and council staff will be assisting the public to undertake a total sort of every load. Traffic flow and unloading areas will be temporarily changed to restrict delays. Customers are urged to help speed up the process by loading their trailers accordingly.”

Mr Pinder said most unwanted goods are not waste, but a resource.

“Every tonne of waste that does not end up in landfill is both an environmental and financial saving/benefit for the Wodonga community,” he said.

“Transfer station staff is already diverting significant waste away from landfill – with community co-operation we could do better.”

He said the trial is about challenging old thinking – waste is of no use to anyone.

“By trialling new ways, we may be able to permanently improve resource recovery at our facility and pass this on to other similar facilities,” he said.

The trial supports the Halve Waste regional campaign, which aims to significantly reduce waste going to the AlburyCity landfill.
