WODONGA Council has granted $14,000 from the Neighbourhood Power project to the Wodonga Dog Park Group to erect an off-leash dog park in Wodonga.
Neighbourhood Power received the application for its large grant program to develop a fenced off-leash dog park (OLDP) in Wodonga in March this year.
The application was developed by a group of eight community members over the preceding four months with the support and advice of the council.
Manager community planning and youth services Jaime Carroll said the off-leash dog park project met all the criteria for the Neighbourhood Power (NHP) program guidelines.
“The Neighbourhood Power program aims to build healthy, vibrant, inclusive neighbourhoods built on individual and community strengths,” she said.
“The program uses a number of tools to achieve this aim including the large matching grant fund.
“Grants are provided on the basis of receiving a contribution from the community to ‘match' the dollars provided by the council.
“The match can be made in a number of ways including volunteer labour, donated material, supplies, services or cash donations.”
Belvoir Park was recommended as the most appropriate site for the project by the council based on the outcomes from the risk and social impact assessment, research and community consultation.
Ms Carroll said the Wodonga Dog Park Group will then form a park guardianship group to work in partnership with the council to oversee the off-leash dog park.
“They will introduce dog park rules, fundraise for future equipment and work in collaboration with council's rangers to ensure safe use of the park,” she said.
