ST Augustine's Primary School student Trent McMullan is this month's recipient of the Young Achiever Support Scheme.
The 12-year-old was selected in the 12 and under Victorian primary schools side to play at the National Basketball Championships.
He just returned from competing at the championships in Newcastle at the weekend, with his team winning gold against Queensland in the grand final.
Trent was one of only two players from country Victoria to make the state side.
The YASS is aimed at assisting young people in their pursuits to participate at a state or national level for activities, events or competitions.
The grant helped Trent's parents pay for transport and accommodation for the six nights he was in Newcastle.
He has been playing basketball for the past four years in Wodonga and has been representing the Wodonga Wolves for the past three years.
Trent is currently in the North East Academy Basketball program, and receives one-on-one coaching through the program.
Wodonga Mayor Cr Mark Byatt said Trent has picked up basketball well.
“At such a young age, I'm sure he will attend many more representative tournaments and camps in years to come,” he said.
“He is certainly an up and coming junior to watch out for.”
