Steering committee welcomes precinct funding

Posted: 17/08/2009

A NEW integrated primary care precinct will be built in the centre of Wodonga, following the recent announcement of $6.65 million in Federal Government funding.

The aim is to bring together all the arms of public and private healthcare working together for the welfare of each person in our community.

It is envisioned that the precinct will be a centre for patients needing to see health specialists, including doctors, dentists, physiotherapists, podiatrists, dieticians, OTs,, speech pathologists, health coaches, psychologist, disability specialists, social workers, childcare experts, educationalists, pharmacy, rehab, retirement support, mental health, pathology and more.

“We have been working on this vision for more than a decade and it is very exciting that it will now come to fruition,” Wodonga GPs Drs Peter Satori and Bill Walton said.

“The exact location of the clinic is to be announced soon as we are still in discussions with various parties, although it will be in the centre of Wodonga.

“We are grateful to the Federal Health Minister Nicola Roxon and the Rudd Government for understanding our community's needs and having the vision to provide funds for this project, which will improve the health of people in Albury-Wodonga.

“We are also very grateful to the Rural Workforce Agency Victoria for having the faith of our vision in giving us ‘seeding' funding to promote this project.

“We also want to recognise the hard work of the local steering committee for the Health Precinct Wodonga, without whom this project would not have got off the ground.”

Wodonga Mayor Cr Mark Byatt said it is a great boost for Wodonga.

“We have been proactive in working with GPs in trying to attract more to our region,” he said.

“Coupled with the TAFE education centre, this provides more than $25 million worth of development in Wodonga's CBD.”
