WODONGA Council will again hold its Over 50s Festival this year from October 5 to 11, and is now calling for volunteers to help out during the week.
While the festival runs for a week and is predominantly focused upon Seniors’ Week and older people, it is also about linking all segments of the community.
The week will kick-start with a ‘Celebration of Generations’ on Sunday, October 5 at 10.30am, where our senior citizens can enjoy a barbecue brunch with friends and family in Woodland Grove and be taken back to yesteryear with old-fashioned games such as giant chess and egg and spoon races.
Renowned local performer Paris will provide an enjoying backdrop of music during the morning.
The festival’s biggest draw card, Frankie J. Holden, will entertain audiences on Monday, October 6 with a concert to be held at the Wodonga Civic Centre. Doors will open at 10am for a 10.30am start.
A luncheon will then be held for attendees, to be followed by an afternoon ball running from 1pm to 4pm. Bookings are required for both.
Wodonga Civic Centre will host a movie day on Wednesday, October 8 featuring a latest release movie. Morning tea will be provided during the interval and bookings are required.
Mystery Bus Tours will once again feature in the Over 50s Festival and will be held on Friday, October 10.
In true mystery bus tour style, locations will be revealed on the day. The tour cost $10 per person and bookings are required before September 1.
Saturday, October 11 will feature jazz in the park, fashion parades and an activity, information and market day for people of all ages to enjoy and participate. Bookings are only required for the fashion parade and lunch.
Manager aged services Debbie MacKinlay said to help run all of these events smoothly, they are on the hunt for some volunteers to join the Guardian Angels Program.
“The aim of the program is to have access to as many volunteers as possibly who may be able to pick an elderly resident up and assist them to participate in the event and then drop them back home safely,” she said.
“It can be for one event or maybe events for the whole week.
“The amount of time you are able to assist will be up to you.”
To register your interest in the Guardian Angels Program, phone Debbie Jaraie on (02) 6022 9620 or call into The Willows in McFarland Rd, Wodonga.
