MAKE sure you mark out the month of October in your calendar this year for Wodonga's Senior Celebrations.
The festival coincides with the 2009 Victorian Seniors Festival, which is an opportunity to celebrate the rich contributions of older people within the community.
This year's festival is in a new and exciting month-long format, focusing primarily on the older generations, however, it is also about linking together all segments of the community.
The main event is a concert by founding member of the Aussie rock band ZOOT, Darryl Cotton.
Mr Cotton has enjoyed a 30-year career in the entertainment industry.
His songwriting credits include ‘Will I' for Mississippi in the mid-70s as well as songs for the New Seekers, Englebert Humperdinck and Shaun Cassidy. It was during that period that Mr Cotton also toured the United States as part of the Olivia Newton John Band and worked with Cliff Richard.
In 1980, he scored a top 10 Australian hit with the self-penned ‘Same Old Girl' and became a regular face on the ABC's Countdown. Several other chart successes followed and his all-rounder status continued with acting appearances in Neighbours, The Young Doctors, Holiday Island and the lead role in Andrew Lloyd Webber's stage production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
In recent years, he has performed regularly with several Aussie music legends including Ronnie Burns, Russell Morris and Jim Keays, as well as The Darryl Cotton Band who have performed throughout Australia, New Zealand and South East Asia.
Mr Cotton will perform on Monday, October 5 at the Wodonga Civic Centre in Hovell St. Doors open at 10am for a 10.30am concert. It will be followed by a luncheon and latest release movie screening.
Other events at Senior Celebrations includes mystery bus tours, an afternoon ball, Wodonga Children's Fair, an open day at The Grange, a Wodonga Brass concert, a portrait drawing workshop, come and try croquet, a Milawa gourmet food region tour, come and try bowls day, Wicked Widows' play and a health expo at The Willows.
