LAURIE Rohan has been known locally as the ‘Baranduda Mayor' for his voluntary contributions to the community.

Mr Rohan has undertaken an enormous amount of voluntary civic work, spent hours helping others, and is always welcoming newcomers into the Baranduda community.

For this, Mr Rohan has been acknowledged by Wodonga Council as the Eagle Award winner for May.

The Eagle Award recognises people within the community who are making someone's life better or who are making a difference in the community.

Mr Rohan was first appointed to be on the Baranduda Community Centre advisory committee in 1993 and continues to sit on the committee.

His past work has included attending committee meetings, helping to organise bonfire nights, and organising fun days including events for people with a disability from S.I.T.E and Leap.

He has been a frequent ‘Father Christmas' for the clients at S.I.T.E and Leap, the Baranduda Community Centre child care centre and the Flying Fruit Fly Circus school.

Mr Rohan helped start the Baranduda Tennis Club in 1992 with other passionate people and has served as president for about eight years.

He never fails to ask new residents the obvious question, “Do you play tennis?”

Mr Rohan has also undertaken voluntary work at the Lutheran Aged Care Home calling bingo for about six years in the early 1990s.

He is involved with Meals On Wheels, through the Rotary Club of Wodonga West every three months. He has been a member of the Rotary Club of Wodonga West for around 15 years and travelled to East Timor in 2000 to help locals to establish their villages after the uprising.

Mr Rohan also travelled to Calcutta, India in 1974-1975 to volunteer with Mother Theresa's order and had an audience with her three times.

If you know a Wodonga resident who is currently soaring high, nominate them by picking up a nomination form from council's Hovell St office, online at www.wodonga.vic.gov.au or by phoning (02) 6022 9300.
