The first comprehensive survey of local businesses in more than five years suggests more than one third have increased profitability over the past 12 months, despite the global economic crisis.
Of the 854 businesses that responded to the Albury Wodonga Local Business Survey, 35% reported an increase in profits last financial year. Of these businesses, 10% saw a 30% surge in profitability.
In other good news, 80% of respondents are optimistic about their business outlook over the next two years.
About half of the survey's respondents intend to make capital investment in building, technology, plant or equipment over the next 12 months.
The survey is the first major initiative to stem from the Albury Wodonga Business Directory project, a joint initiative of the Albury Wodonga Corporation, AlburyCity and the City of Wodonga. The directory, at www.alburywodonga.gov.au, includes a search engine, providing a quick and easy way for local residents to search for local businesses.
Survey results have provided an important snapshot of local business and industry, allowing the corporation and two councils to better understand the challenges and opportunities faced by local businesses. The results will underpin regional development strategies and lobbying.
