As the first Australian home for about 320,000 post-war migrants from more than 30 countries, Bonegilla is a reminder of the role immigrants played in developing the Wodonga region and Australia.
Once made up of 24 accommodation blocks and administration buildings spread over a 130ha area, today all that is left of the centre is Block 19.
Bonegilla’s Block 19 is 10km northeast of Wodonga and provides visitors with a vivid insight into what migrants would have experienced in their first Australian home.
It is now the hub of a new interpretative centre called The Beginning Place, built to increase the understanding of visitors to the migrant experience.

The Beginning Place is open from 9.30am to 4.30pm daily and features historic facts, stories, photos, a short film and artworks depicting various migrants’ stories.
A focus point for all post-war migrants, families and members of the public, The Beginning Place is a cultural heritage site of great national significance to all Australians.
Self-guided tour brochures are available at the site to explain how the various buildings were used during its history.
