Urapun Kai Buai - Billy Missi
![]() | ||
Torres Strait artist Billy Missi is set to attract attention in a major solo exhibition of contemporary linocut prints. Urapun Kai Buai (one big kin) focuses on family and cultural protocols and the artist's contemporary life experiences growing up in Zenadh-Kes (the Torres Strait). Along with kinship, inspiration for the series of images is based on the natural environment and what the artists describes as “pure nature” reflecting the traditional ways of survival, including everyday stories and knowledge. The artwork is part of a distinct printmaking movement in the Torres Strait that integrates traditional woodarving skills with contemporary art practice, and enables indigenous artists such as Missi to pass on significant oral history and cultural heritage through visual stories. Missi's intricate detail and tonal balance evoke a sense of flow and organic unity, a sense that all things are interconnected and dependant on one another for survival.

Kazband
![]() | ||
In 2004, armed with a pile of newly composed fiddle tunes, violinist and composer Karen Kyriakou (aka Kaz) approached her three favourite people in the whole wide world (who also happened to be excellent musicians and live in her home town of Melbourne) and started a band! The music of Kazband is mostly original, influenced by the traditional dance music of Eastern Europe (and Kaz's own Greek and Cypriot heritage). Karen's music is filled with memorable and descriptive melodies that weave around each other creating intricate harmonies and textures. The music is at time energetic, other times reflective, and accompanied with the spirited rhythmic drive of the original dance music traditions. Kazband also plays their own interpretations of the traditional music of the area, from Klezmer music – (instrumental Jewish music) currently experiencing a resurgence of popularity, to Russian Gypsy music, with slow and lilting melodies that eventually speed up to infectious tempos that will have you dance-dance-dancing (or at the very least, tapping your feet really fast!).
Having released their debut album ‘Cockroach and other stories…' to much media acclaim in November 2007, Kazband have been performing regularly in Melbourne and beyond, having made numerous appearances on radio, at festivals, concerts, folk clubs, markets and more….
Kazband are: Karen Kyriakou (violin/composer), Jason Day (clarinet), Greg Lavell/Dave Evans (accordion) and Luke Richardson (double bass). Kazband was the runner up in the 2005 MusicOz Awards for ‘Best World Music Group', and Karen won the Tim Whelan Port Fairy Tune Writing Competition, also in 2005, with her tune ‘Cockroach Enjoy music influenced by the traditional dance music of Eastern Europe, with memorable and descriptive melodies. Runner up - 2005 MusicOz Awards for ‘Best World Music Group'- won the Tim Whelan Port Fairy Tune Writing Competition with tune ‘Cockroach'.
