Wodonga Council's youth services team at the start of the year collected more than 2250 surveys, spoke with 82 young people through focus groups and 97 young people attended the RedExpression Youth Forum. The young people have been able to share their experiences and knowledge through your support and assistance
The young people's feedback will be valuable in helping us plan for the future.
The key messages young people gave us were:
- There is a lack of non-sporting recreational activities in Wodonga for young people;
- Wodonga's young people are highly connected to sporting activities within the community;
- Young people want to be involved in the community;
- There needs to be a shift in social attitudes so that young people feel valued in Wodonga;
- Young people would like a more diverse range of shops and entertainment in Wodonga;
- Young people's relationships with people who are important to them are essential to their participation in community life and feeling they belong;
- Young people link access to education with better opportunities for their future;
- A better transport system would make it easier for young people to access employment opportunities, and;
- Young people want an environmentally-friendly city.
We have now fed this information back to young people, and have invited any young person interested in developing actions to address these issues raised to contact us. If you have any young person you would like to recommend for this working party please let me know.
In the coming weeks we will be in contact with our key partners to discuss the findings, identify any further trends and potential linkages.
