National Youth Week (NYW) 2009

2009 National Youth Week (NYW) March 28 to April 5, 2009

Wodonga Council's youth services team is running a number of activities that we hope will engage a wide variety of young people from the community, and raise awareness of the valuable contributions that they make. Our mission statement for the week is:

To acknowledge, value and celebrate the achievements and contributions in the community, of all young people in Wodonga.

The overriding theme of the week is 'RED' with the activities to include:

  • Well RED magazine;
  • RED Expressions youth forum;
  • RED hART; and
  • REDfest (skate competition). REDfest is the marquee event in a week-long celebration of young people in Wodonga during National Youth Week entitled ‘Red’.

The overall mood of REDfest is one of colour, vibrancy and fun. The park will be transformed into a sea of red as attendees, celebrate their youthful effervescence. It will incorporate the following exciting event elements:

  • Skate competition- Peninsula Skateworld will host an exhilarating skate competition for young people of all ages which includes a thrilling display by professional skaters.
  • Live music featuring Adelaide all-girl punk rock band Legless, who have only recently returned from a tour of East Timor entertaining the troops. They will be supported by Radio Star.
  • Shep Huntly - a circus, sideshow and variety performer will also delight the crowd with his amazing, daring acts.
  • The Pinnacle of Terror - is an activity which includes abseiling, rock climbing, a high wire, and a leap of faith.
  • Market stalls - young people will be engaged in interactive activities such as temporary tattoo art, jewellery making, cosmetic trials etc.

Well RED magazine: is a magazine which will get distributed to EVERY household in Wodonga. The aim being to have stories, profiles and photos of young people, that we hope will raise the positive images of young people in the community, so that they can be viewed as valuable members of the community.

RED hART: It is an art project which will involve students working with an accomplished local artist at REDfest on Sunday, March 28 at Willow Park skate bowl to develop a sculpture that will be representative of young people. The sculpture will be exhibited in Woodland Grove during National Youth Week (until April 5) to be easily accessible to many young people and community members, who will be able to come and write positive affirmations about young people on it.

RED Expression youth forum: The youth forum will be held on Tuesday, March 31 at Gypsy Gardens function centre. More than 80 young people who work, live, study or socialise in Wodonga will have the opportunity to discuss solutions on key themes identified in the youth consultations conducted by youth services earlier this year. The forum will conclude by the young people providing key recommendations for action to be included in council’s Youth Strategy 2009-2014. It will be facilitated by Roger Holdsworth, who is the senior research associate at the Youth Research Centre.
