Neighbourhood Power news

A profile of Neighbourhood Power funded projects:

These great projects only take place through the support of community members who give their time, labour, skills and donations. The projects profiled below are sucessful in meeting the aims of the Neighbourhood Power Matching Fund - to strengthen and activate the local community.

Friends of the Garden Project

The City of Wodonga is pleased to announce the latest allocation of Neighbourhood Power funding. A large matching grant has been awarded to the Friends of the Garden (FROGs) Project which is being run by Wodonga Primary School and the surrounding community.

This exciting project will see the development of a community animal area based at the school where there will be animals ranging from guinea pigs to pigeons and of course frogs. There will also be a compost and garden area and plenty of opportunities for the community to be part of the project through volunteering and participation.

There will be regular access to the area outside of school hours and it is expected that the project will see the area develop as a hub of community activity. Congratulations to all who have been involved in planning this project and we look forward to seeing great things unfold.

For more information on how to get involved, contact the school directly on (02) 6048 0300.

The Dog Park

The Dog Park has been constructed and is open to the public. The Dog Park is located at Belvoir Park on Reuss Rd, near Church St.

People For Paws, the Dog Park working group, has been tirelessly fundraising and gathering support for the park.

While in the park there are a number of important rules to follow, these are:

  • All dogs must be supervised and under effective control at all times
  • All dogs must be vaccinated and registered
  • Dispose of your dog's waste with the bags provided
  • Dogs showing aggression must be immediately removed from the park
  • Children under the age of 16 years must be accompanied by a responsible adult
  • All dogs must remain on lead until inside the main part of the park

It is also recommended that you:
  • Bring your own water and water bowl for your dog
  • Refrain from eating food or smoking cigarettes in or around the dog park

Keep an eye out for brochures on park etiquette. Also don't forget to chat to a member of People For Paws if you would like more advice on how to look after your dog in the Dog Park.

Community wood-fired oven at Wodonga West Primary School

Wodonga West Primary School's wood-fired oven will complement the school's Stephanie Alexander Kitchen garden. The building of the oven was a large community project, with many volunteers helping to construct the oven and others donating materials.

Assistant principal Sharon Mawby said the idea for the wood-fired oven came after visiting another school in Melbourne that was operating a pizza oven to support its garden.

“We then held discussions with various people in Wodonga, who persuaded us that a community wood fired oven would be more versatile and user-friendly on a long-term basis,” she said.

“This coincided with the council's Neighbourhood Power program and an application was made.”

The wood-fired oven is complementary to the school's plan to open up its produce patch into a community garden, with the produce to be cooked in the new oven.

The school was given Thomas Moritz' contact, who built the community oven in Albury, and also constructed a similar one at Whitfield Primary School.

Baranduda community playground fence extension

This project extends the existing playground fence adjacent to the pre-school playground at Baranduda Community Centre, creating simple access to the playground area by a wide variety of centre users.

The extensions will also improve access to the playgrund to parents of young children who play tennis or participate in other outdoor activites at the centre, including social grups who access the barbecue area.

African Cultural Night at Wodonga

The African Cultural Night held at Wodonga Civic Centre in December, 2009 was a huge success. The event, supported through Wodonga Council's Neighbourhood Power program, was attended by more than 350 people celebrating African culture through music, dance, food and a fashion parade. The night was organised by the African Union Albury Wodonga, a newly formed organisation representing the African community living in the Albury-Wodonga area.

Birallee Park Neighbourhood House wins award

A Neighbourhood Power funded project being run by the Birallee Park Neighbourhood House won the 2009 Premier's Community Volunteering Award for Community Volunteering Innovation (Regional). This award recognises the tireless effort that volunteers have put into the Our Table To Yours project. This is an innovative project providing frozen meals to those in the community experiencing hardship.

A large community garden provides produce and volunteers raise the funds needed to grow and purchase ingredients in order to prepare, cook and freeze more than 100 meals monthly. These meals are available seven days a week. Volunteers gain invaluable experience in reducing food miles and carbon footprints, as well as assisting the community in a practical and innovative way. This project is a first for Wodonga. Congratulations to the volunteers involved in this project.
