The small matching grant round closed November 28, 2009 with two successful applications:
- Community wood-fired oven at Wodonga West Primary School
- Baranduda community playground fence extension
Community wood-fired oven at Wodonga West Primary School
Wodonga West Primary School's wood-fired oven will complement the school's Stephanie Alexander Kitchen garden. The building of the oven was a large community project, with many volunteers helping to construct the oven and others donating materials.
Assistant principal Sharon Mawby said the idea for the wood-fired oven came after visiting another school in Melbourne that was operating a pizza oven to support its garden.
“We then held discussions with various people in Wodonga, who persuaded us that a community wood fired oven would be more versatile and user-friendly on a long-term basis,” she said.
“This coincided with the council's Neighborhood Power program and with the support of the program co-ordinator, Tracey Farrant, an application was made.”
The wood-fired oven is complimentary to the school's plan to open up its produce patch into a community garden, with the produce to be cooked in the new oven. The school was given Thomas Moritz contact, who built the community oven in Albury and also constructed a similar one at Whitfield Primary School.
Baranduda community playground fence extension
This project extends the existing playground fence adjacent to the pre-school playground at Baranduda Community Centre, creating simple access to the playground area by a wide variety of centre users.
The extensions will also improve access to the playgrund to parents of young children who play tennis or participate in other outdoor activites at the centre, including social grups who access the barbecue area.
